A true "stay-at-home" home business
These can be either:
(1) a typical business like those found outside the home, that you do inside your home... (instead of being someone else's employee at their place of business, or self-employed in your own separate business building) or
(2) newer, more unique ways to make money from home online that have come with the growth of the internet
A home based business
a typical business that is performed by going to the customer, that you only organize an run from inside your home, instead of from inside your own separate business building

See if you can sort the following alphabetical idea list of home based businesses into those two categories:

Bed & Breakfast or Motel - own it, operate it, live in it
Consultant in your specialized professional field
Crafts, jewelry - designing/creating/selling
Day trading - stocks, futures, or currencies
Daycare or petcare in your home
Direct selling
E-bay sales of items that you own or that you buy to sell
Franchises - many are home-based (for instance, my car windshield was repaired in my home driveway by a man who owned a franchise for that type of go-to-the-customer business
Gardening - selling home-grown produce or landscape plants
Medical billing home business
Music instructor or other teaching/tutoring
Mystery shopper
Network marketing (multi level marketing businesses)- This IS a legitimate work from home business, although not right for everyone. (SEE MORE BELOW)
Online surveys
Pet-sitting in customers' homes
Real estate - buying and then selling/renting houses or business buildings
Rent out a room or other space in your home
Transcription for doctors,lawyers
Vending machine ownership and maintenance
Webmaster of your own website about a topic that you are knowledgeable or passionate about (with various methods of earning money from doing this). This is a low-cost way of starting a successful online business. (SEE MORE BELOW)

The best types of businesses are ones where you earn more money from other people's work than from your own work. These are businesses where you multiply your efforts and earnings by having employees, and passive income opportunities.

A few things that do NOT belong in a list of home based businesses are...

Ponzi schemes (made infamous most recently by Richard Madoff ) or any other blatantly illegal activity, such as
chain letters that involve sending money to anyone
envelope stuffing work from home (may not be illegal, but these "opportunities" are often shut down by state business regulatory agencies as home based business scams)
replicated "business-in-a-box systems" such as Carbon Copy Pro and others (which are not illegal, but almost always sound like a too-good-to-be-true way to get rich fast.. but are frequently not as simple to carry out as they're advertised to be... and are not likely to be nearly as successful for you as they are for the creator of the system)
any type of "business" that requires you to heavily advertise someone else's business or "system" or "program". These tend to be advertised to network marketers who are struggling and have not yet succeeded in their own business enough yet to be able to succeeed in promoting for someone else.

So what are MY choices?

I'm currently involved with two from the list above.
This is a good strategy for creating multiple streams of income... always a good financial strategy... not "putting all your eggs in one basket", as the saying goes.
